„I am proud of my father“

US First Daughter Ivanka Trump (37) is the the star of the American delegation at the Munich Security Conference!

The 37-year-old talks with BILD about her new project, Chancellor Angela Merkel and also about her father – the most powerful man in the world.*

BILD: What is the most important topic to you at MSC?

Ivanka Trump: „I will be particularly focused on the importance of women’s economic empowerment and how it correlates with national security and global stability. Economic empowerment is, simply put, good defense policy. When we empower women, they invest back into their families and communities, having a transformative impact that creates more peaceful and prosperous societies. This is an issue that the United States is deeply committed to, and I am personally excited to share more about last week’s launch of the White House’s bold new initiative: the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative.
W-GDP, which aims to reach 50 million women around the world by 2025, is the first-ever, all of U.S. government approach to advancing global women’s economic empowerment. W-GDP is grounded in the priorities of the President’s National Security Strategy and we hope to work with our international partners, multilateral institutions and the private sector to tackle some of the greatest barriers that constrain women’s full and free participation in the global economy. True global security and stability can only be realized when women and men alike are able to contribute to economies at all levels.“

Is there any political issue on which you are carrying a message from the President to convey to the Germans?

Trump: „We look forward to continuing our partnership with Germany and advancing the common interests of the American and German people.“

What will be your message to the Germans on the 2 percent spending goal for Nato?

Trump: „I know Germany is working on a plan to reach the 2% goal and look forward to seeing it carried out.“

In which areas do you believe there could be more cooperation between Germany and the United States?

Trump: „Germany is one of the United States’ greatest allies in countless different areas, particularly as it relates to the economy and security. Supporting women’s economic empowerment is one area that we can work collaboratively to ensure that women can fully participate and thrive in the global economy. This is in our collective national security interests. Women often face institutional barriers to entering the economic marketplace, both in the public and private sector, and these are barriers that we have the power to address to reach our shared goals for economic growth, security and stability. I had the honor of joining Chancellor Merkel at the W20 in 2017, and there she made it very clear that the economic empowerment of women is a top priority for Germany, when she committed to Germany joining the United States in being a founding member of the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi). During that visit I also saw firsthand, at the invitation of the Chancellor, Germany’s leadership in vocational education and skills training, which is an issue that the President and myself are also deeply committed to expanding in the United States. President Trump created the National Council for the American Worker, representing 14 federal agencies that are working to better coordinate resources so that all American workers of all ages and backgrounds have the skills necessary to compete in an increasing digital economy.

Additionally, last May, a number of leaders across industry, education, and labor presented a plan to the President outlining a new vision for industry-recognized apprenticeships, building in part off Germany’s model. We are in the early stages of implementing this plan and helping more Americans earn a paycheck while receiving valuable on-the-job training.“

When Chancellor Merkel visited the White House you were sitting next to her. How do you view her as one one of the most dominant figures in global politics? What was your personal impression? Do you consider her a role model for dimensioniert and girls?

Trump: „I have great respect for Chancellor Merkel and her leadership role on the world stage. On a personal level, I also very much appreciate her company and sense of humor!
We have had many positive opportunities to engage with each other; the Chancellor’s dedication to vocational education and the economic empowerment of women are just two areas in which we share common goals and interests.“

The MSC is mainly about global conflicts. Which conflict around the world worries you the most?

Trump: „One of the main challenges is the lack of economic opportunities for people around the world. That is why I am so focused on women’s economic empowerment, because too often, women are left out of the conversation. Economic opportunity is vital to the security of states, and no country can truly succeed without equal participation for half of its population. Research shows that states with higher female participation in the labor force exhibit lower levels of international violence and are less likely to use military force to resolve international conflict. Creating more economic opportunity and greater prosperity can help us address many of the other key issues and conflicts around the world.“

The President announced that he wants to visit Germany and the places of his ancestors. Are there any details yet? Are you going to travel with him?

Trump: „President Trump does indeed hope to visit Germany soon. As friends and close allies, we share many issues of mutual importance with Germany. I have had so many positive experiences in Germany over the past two years, in Berlin, Hamburg, and now here in Munich.“

As you know, President Trump is viewed very critically by many Germans. Many Germans trust President Putin more than President Trump. What is your message to them?

Trump: „I think Germans understand that they have far more in common with America than with Russia. We agree on individual freedom, the rule of law and the importance of equality of economic opportunity. We should not allow those with a political agenda to try to divide us.“

Also the German media is very critical of President Trump. As his daughter, what can you tell them they are missing or getting wrong about him?

Trump: „I am very proud of my father and what he’s accomplished as President of the United States. This Administration has implemented significant reforms to make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous. The United States economy is booming and thanks to the President’s commitment to creating economic opportunity for all Americans we have more people working in the United States than ever before. We also recognize the critical importance of working with our partners to achieve global stability and are committed to that goal.“

What are you especially looking forward to seeing in Munich?

Trump: „I am looking forward to the opportunity to engage with many of the world’s national security and defense leaders at the Munich Security Conference and to be leading a panel discussion on the importance of Women’s Economic Empowerment. And, while I expect our schedule to be packed, I do hope to have the opportunity to see the clock in Marienplatz!“

Is there anything special you want to bring back from Germany? A gift? A souvenir? And also: Any political success you hope to achieve?

Trump: „One of the key components of W-GDP is recognizing there is a role for both the public and private sector to play in advancing women’s economic empowerment around the globe. I am looking forward to meaningful discussions on best practices and opportunities to further this goal and hope to walk away with new ideas and collaborative partnerships to create real and lasting impact.

On another note, my kids are hoping I also bring back some delicious Bavarian chocolates—and I fully intend to!“
